VSL SiloLogistics Born: Ugly duckling or beautiful swan?
'The VSL SiloLogistics-site at Born in the province of Limburg, The Netherlands, is the odd one out. Though we also work with bulk plastics, we concentrate more on increasing the value of the plastic than we do on transportation; we let our expert sisters do that for us.' For Englishman Ian Grace, Site Manager at Born, Limburg feels like home. He recently accepted the challenge to lead the way in Born and now explains what makes Born so special. 'Over the years, SiloLogistics Born, has developed into a professional recycler of thermoplastic Polyamide/Nylon, widely used, for instance by car manufacturers in bumpers, hub-caps and car interiors. There are several steps in our process. Depending on the raw materials supplied and the end products required, different routes can be taken.'
'We have a line that has been developed to break down large blocks of polymer, the broken down blocks are checked for contamination and are then milled. This milled polymer can already be considered an end product, though of relatively low value. If we take this milled polymer and combine it with rejected or low quality polymer yarn, we can melt them together, filter out any contamination and produce a high quality granule from our state of the art cascade extruder/granulators. We can take this a step further and compound this polymer by addition of glass fibre, a filler, or possibly even choose to chemically modify the polymer. We can therefore fine tune the properties and increase the value of the end product drastically. This extrusion, filtration and compounding takes place in a one-step-process, leading to substantial cost reduction.'
'These processes have been followed for many years, serving only one customer. However, since the end of 2008 we have secured a position from which we can approach new customers and offer these services and more. Historically we have processed polyamides, today the restrictions have been removed and we may process other polymers; Polyesters, Polypropylene and other polyolefins for example. In addition to the production of the granulate we are also in a position to blend and store in silo, fill octabins or bags and also load bulk tankers. On top of all that, SiloLogistics Born has recently achieved accreditation to ISO/TS-16949, the automotive quality standard as third tier supplier and continues to maintain its accreditation to ISO 14001.'
