Transport sector growth continues.
Total Dutch transport sector turnover rose again this past quarter, as it did the preceding quarter. The five previous quarters showed a consistent drop in turnover. This was published by the Central Bureau for Statistics (CBS) on 6 December. These fresh CBS statistics confirm what branch organization TLN indicated already in October in its Q3 2010 economic cycle note: growth continues. Q3 turnover was five percent up from Q3 2009. Still, transport sector turnover is a far cry from its pre-crisis level, warns the CBS on its website.
Growth is generated mainly by growing export. By the end of November the Purchasing Managers' Index indicated improved demand for Dutch commodities. The index, on the rise for 14 months in a row, showed in November the strongest growth in order volumes for Dutch companies in 7 months. Demand is both domestic and from overseas. Production lagged behind causing 'finished product' inventory to drop and delivery periods to lengthen.
In the transport sector the largest growth is therefore to be found among forwarders, thus the CBS. This specific group realized eleven percent growth. Equally, transshipment firms performed above average with a seven percent rise in turnover. The CBS indicated that the largest branch in the transport sector, road haulage, enjoyed a five percent growth.
