Social partners forecast huge trucker shortage in the Netherlands.
There is potentially a shortage of 58,000 truckers in the Netherlands in the years to come. This is one of the main conclusions of a study commissioned by the social partners in the road transport sector. The first copy of the book "Road Transport and Logistics: Vision 2015" was presented on 24 June, last, to outgoing Minister Donner. On that day also, the website www.socialeinnovatietransport.nl was launched.
The study reveals that the sector faces the huge challenge of a 58,000 truckers recruitment demand. In the years to 2015, 49,000 truckers will be needed as replacements alone. Even when the economic recession persists. The social partners aim at an action plan designed to ensure the availability of qualified personnel, an influx of young workers, and special social innovation projects. The organizations also want a scheme to alleviate the excessively high training costs for new truckers.
The study also concludes that the Dutch road transport sector managed to maintain its market share in international transport thanks to its locations outside the Netherlands. And that social innovations such as those in working hours management and transport systems are an indispensible success factor for the future of road transport and logistics.
The social partners launched the website www.socialeinnovatietransport.nl designed to disseminate knowledge and expertise of social innovations in the road transport sector. This website gives road transport companies tools to help them assess the social innovations, realize potential gains for both companies and truckers, and implement these social innovations.
