Safety is top priority at VSL SiloLogistics.
From the moment VSL SiloLogistics started as an independent enterprise in 2008, S&H of employees and parties VSL has direct or indirect working relationships with is top priority. At its own sites, at the sites of customers and en route, the focus is on the prevention of unsafe situations and accidents. Pieter Schouten was appointed Group Safety Officer on 1 February, last, to record and implement a uniform and modern safety policy for the VSL holding overall. Pieter has been with VSL and its legal successors for over twenty years developing his safety expert skills.
'Safe working practices and conditions are determined mainly by people's behavior. Behavior can be positively influenced by the management system built around it. Having built a sound system, you put in place your safety policy to incrementally achieve company-wide zero undesirable behavior tolerance. Customers impose this requirement, and rightly so.'
Communicating extensively using innovative means is another item on Pieter's action list. 'Make clear what you are doing and what you expect in terms of behavior and culture. And again, you do this to achieve structural behavioral improvement and higher customer satisfaction in terms of safety and quality. Coming newsletters will contain additional information about objectives and results and the company's action plan concerning specific safety aspects. We also intend to share real-time safety and quality statistics with stakeholders, which is quite unique in this industry.'
