'Overweight truckers constitute traffic risk'.
Dutch national daily 'AD' recently reported that overweight truckers constitute a traffic risk. Obese truckers are more likely to nod off behind the wheel. The article claims this calls for an annual sleep apnea test. Most overweight people suffer from sleep apnea. People with this condition wake up frequently during the night when their breath stops short.
Sufferers get too little deep sleep, resulting during the day in fatigue and concentration issues. Truckers falling asleep behind the wheel cause traffic accidents. With gaining weight an occupational hazard, they suffer from sleep apnea more than other road users, sleep experts claim in this article. And the National Science Institute for Traffic Safety Studies concurs. There are various ways to counter sleep apnea, such as losing weight or wearing a respirator or a bit at night.
Most people are not aware they have this condition, says neurologist Schimsheimer. Without wishing to badmouth truckers as meatloaf munching fatsoes, in Schimsheimer's professional opinion a mandatory test should be introduced for all frequent road users.
