Euro parliament votes “for” the new tolls for trucks.
This months a small majority in the Euro parliament voted "for" the implementation of a Kilometre Tax for HGV,s in the EU. In the new Tax, the costs of Infrastructure, Pollution and Noise reduction are to be taken up. The Tax will be lower for HGV's that have lower emissions and thus higher for high polluters. The variation in tax level is to stimulate transport companies to use more economic and quieter HGV's. The Tax could the fixed cost of the Eurovignet. Still in dispute is the congestion charge which is meant to motivate drivers to drive outside the peak times. The EU Ministers still need to vote on this later on this year. If the Ministers and the EP reach a compromise, then each EU land, as yet without a toll system for HGV (e.g. NL & BE) shall be able to choose whether or not to introduce this new Tax.
