Earning money with sustainable logistics
Both Government and Businesses alike are looking more and more to sustainable ways to work and continue to thrive in a responsible way. For logistic services it is on the one side complying with the requirements of the customer and on the other side demonstrating how it considers the carbon footprint of the transport and logistic activities supplied to that ecologically aware customer.
ICT can play a crucial role in this aspect, for instance, via an internet portal service providers can allow customers to see what the transport options would mean for CO2 emissions. In this way the influence of "same day delivery" on the emissions can seen and an awareness can also be created at your customer. Internet helps with the booking of load and unload "windows" thanks to portals such as Transwide & Elemica. From 2009 it will be possible for customers of VSL Silologistics to check stock levels via an "extranet" application. One further example, putting sensors into customers silo's: The sensors can be used by the logistic service provider for planning the next delivery, essentially taking the ordering out the customers hands and allowing for more efficient (combining with a return load), therefore less damaging and less costly transportation.
