Complaints about poor communication during the recession.
'During a recession it is even more important for your company to communicate well with every- and anybody who can be important for your company, both now and in the future. It is probably the most well known tip, that during difficult times companies should increase the level of communication, though in reality the opposite usually occurs. No news letters anymore, no marketing activities, account managers visit less often and are difficult to reach, business partners trust each other less and also let that be known! This all leads to an unwanted and unnecessary downwards spiral.
During a congress in the Swiss Montreux, representatives of Automobile producers were criticised by service providers and suppliers alike. The Automobile producers had apparently communicated the reduced sales badly and as a result of the drastic change in supply chain, the suppliers / providers were left with very short reaction times and overcapacities. ‘Even when the commercial vehicle sales dropped from 26000 to just 600 per month, this information was not communicated. This makes the term "partnership" questionable, a good weather relationship! There is absolutely no communication between producer and us.' The general conclusion was that "The communication between Producer, Supplier & Service Provider needs to be significantly improved"
Better communication of changes in the market place means that suppliers, who are also feeling the recession, can avoid further unnecessary costs. An improved IT structure, for instance, can also lead to improved communication. Of course the dip in communication has been exaggerated by the negative reports in the media, to find the good news, you often have to use a magnifying glass!
