'Always at it, always inventive in Hoogerheide'.
A fall day in late September. The weather is great in beautiful Hoogerheide. VSL SiloLogistics people are in high spirits and working hard. The job of packaging and transporting wheat gluten for Cargill is a never ending process. Site Manager Piet Nogarede is not one to sit back. He is about to take his vacation, but not quite yet. 'There is always plenty to do, here and in our Tessenderlo location, 100 kilometers away in Belgium, which was added to my responsibilities as Site Manager last year.'
Piet is interviewed in his office that used to be his home, next to warehouses and silos. 'I lived here with my family for twelve years and three years ago we moved into a house in the village. This office is future proof. A future with Cargill, but also with other firms in the food & feed market. Because this will always be our core business: packaging and transporting bulk products for processing into food and feed. Third parties use our tanker truck cleaning installation too. We provide interior and exterior tank cleaning services for food and non-food customers.'
The logistic services for the Cargill wheat gluten activity are the core of the work in Hoogerheide since 1988, and Piet Nogarede has been a part of it since 1993. 'This used to be part of Koningen, but this company is no more. Vos acquired it In 1998 and since 2008 we are part of VSL SiloLogistics.' The new SiloLogistics culture appeals to the people in Hoogerheide. 'We are traditionally a close-knit team', says Operational Manager Jack Marcus, 'but we do look outside as well. Open and direct communications with colleagues and supervisors, both at and among the sites, provides extra opportunities. After all, if you don't talk to one another, you can't make improvements! I for one want to learn from my fellow OM's at other sites, and I want to share my experiences with them.'
Piet is giving a group of guests a tour of the site. He explains how SiloLogistics logistic services are fully integrated into the Cargill process, from production to delivery at the customer. 'We provide optimum flexibility and can switch within the hour. One example: there is no such thing as a poor quality gluten, but they do come in many different grades. Say a lab test reveals that a consignment is not optimum for a specific bakery in the Veluwe area, and the transport has already been scheduled. Then we switch and discuss with Cargill how to modify our packing plan to ensure that the product scheduled for transport is bagged, ready for loading into a container and shipped for export on time. So we are always at it, coming up with inventive solutions every day!'
